When we are learning to read and to spell, we work on recognising the first, middle or end sound in a 3 letter word. The pupils have loved playing this game in class recently:

We have continued to work with P1 on Monday afternoons to take part in PE activities and Outdoor learning. We are now using balance bikes as well as 2 wheeled scooters and the 3 wheeled scooters to develop our balancing and steering skills. The children are really good at looking up to see where they are going so we have started adding in cones to go round too. We have been talking about how the weather affects the ground so we have to be more careful when the ground is wet and we have to look out for slippy leaves.
The class have now learned and worked on all of their initial sounds and are starting to work on sounds which are made using 2 letters. So far we have worked on qu, ch, sh and th.
We have been using Jolly Phonics songs and stories to help us with these sounds. Here are some You Tube clips which can support your child with their phonics: Alphabetic order Jolly Phonics songs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvRKcch4DyE "ch" sound song repeated - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbWlNxnLl5g "ch" sound song and "ch" words - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiT2nd4GJJQ Dear Dad, Mum or carer Free Bookbug Primary 1 Family Bag activity sessions Starting school is an exciting and challenging time for your child and they may be feeling this even more after the changes to their lives from Covid-19. This week classes across the school have been learning about coding to celebrate EU Coding Week.
In our class we have learned a little bit about robots. Pupils in P2 designed their own robot and did some writing about it. All pupils learned about how robots are coded to follow instructions. We set up a grid in class and followed directions to learn about coding. There are some photographs of pupils learning about coding below. For extra resources and activities, please have a look at the EU coding website: https://codeweek.eu/resources/CodingAtHome Some useful links for letters and sounds:

We do lots of activities such as play together in the woodland and at the trim track, do obstacle courses, play on scooters, learn new games and play with the parachute.
We are very grateful to Aldi in Galashiels who generously donated our new helmets to keep us safe when riding the scooters. |
