P4/5 have been developing their understanding of an image as a source of evidence for finding out about the past. They had to read the image and find clues to discuss what these items may be and how they were used and understood the limitations of a picture in how much information it gives us. The images above are a back straightener, an abacus, ink bottle, finger stocks, writing set, chalkboard and a desk and chair set.
After finding out what some of them were and what a typical day at school may have been like, all the children have decided they are glad they go to school now and not then!

What a challenge! First of all, we had to tackle the vocabulary in the question, the way it was worded was a little confusing! Once we did though, we made a plan and tested it out. After some trial and error, we found our answers :)
This week, everyone picked a category for their personal project. They could choose from:
Inventions Home School Sport Once they had selected, they had a quick look online to get an idea of what their category would be or contain and then decided if they wanted to do something general on this or if there was a specific area of interest they wanted to look at further. It was interesting to see their choices (I was surprised by a few!). We have been developing our understanding of adjectives today :) First we identified adjectives in a story, discussed some all together to make some simple sentences more interesting and then tried some in our jotters (the children had to identify where an adjective would go, then rewrite the sentences in their jotters with adjectives that made sense).
Enjoying some ERIC (everyone reading in class) time and then having an opportunity to develop those all important social skills :)
Today we read 2 stories that are alternatives to classic children’s tales. We read The True Story of the Three Little Pigs as told by the wolf and The Wolf’s Story (his side of Little Red Riding Hood). They all enjoyed hearing ‘the other side’ but were not entirely convinced :) Everyone then chose one as a base for their own stories this week. The writing was marvellous, lots of great ideas and details! When finished, children shared their stories in pairs or small groups and some children then read their stories to the class. Great reading aloud skills and also a great audience :)
Lovely literacy session this morning! Each group has settled into the routine and carousel, they knew exactly what they were doing and when and everyone worked so hard and were respectful to other groups learning too (and kept the noise to a great level). Every group tried four activities today - reading with me, writing station, IDL on IPADs and a Finger Gym station to help the muscles in our fingers and hands become nice and strong :)
After finalising all the promises, everyone then worked in groups to design a display for our class charter. The only specification was that it had to be something everyone could fit on/in. There were amazing ideas- a mansion, a double decker bus, a party boat, an aeroplane and a house on wheels travelling along the road. Once designs were completed, we all voted on our favourite to be made into a display and the winning idea? The Party boat!
P4/5 have been looking at and discussing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) . We have discussed how they are all equally important and that everyone should be aware of the rights they have. The class then picked five that they would like to focus on for their Class Charter and have been working in groups to create pupil and adult promises to respect and promote these for everyone. Lots of thinking, sharing and good listening.
