We are very excited to start our very first ELC blog. We will use this space to update you with news and pictures of what your children have been learning within the Sunshine room. Please feel free to add comments and suggestions.

This is our loose parts play area. Here the children have the freedom to use their imagination to create and bring to life their own ideas and visions for their play. They have a range of materials on offer to them such as sticks, wood slices, corks, pine cones, shells, dinosaurs and cars and much more.  The children take responsibility for keeping the resources tidy by using the photo picture cards to remind them where things go. This allows the children the opportunity to take ownership over their ELC room, which they have really embraced and they  now enjoy working together to put things back where they belong.

Here is our Home corner, this area is a very popular play space within the Sunshine room. Following the children's interest we have expanded this area and have included more real life objects such as lamps, microwave, kettle toaster, cutlery and crockery. The children got involved in moving the furniture, choosing the resources for the space and setting the table with real life items. They worked together making decisions and valuing each others ideas and opinions. The children now have far richer learning opportunities here and this has been seen with the vast array of imaginative play ideas the children have been creating.

Role play - here is a little bit of information on the benefits of role play for children.....

There are several types of role play:

Occupational
Doctors, police, teachers or even builders are some of the play roles that encourage empathy among children.

Fantasy
Children are fascinated by superhero and fantasy characters such as unicorns, dinosaurs, princesses, robots and batman because of their super powers. When they wear the capes or princess dresses, it helps them identify good from bad while encouraging bravery.

Real Life Situations
Playing out real life situations such as camping, construction, Mums & Dads, schools and much more, allows children to learn about their real environment and this helps them develop their physical traits and communication skills.

Having established these important facts, it is clear that role playing is learning in a disguised and fun way.
