Pupils have worked on taking part in different spelling activities to help them to learn new spelling patterns. Pupils were given a new list of words last Thursday as well as encouraged to recap previous spelling lists. New spelling words will be added to the blog soon.
Below is a list of the spelling activities which pupils should be familiar with from their previous spelling homework tasks as well as some new activities to try out:
Rainbow spelling
Rainbow write your spelling words. Write each word first in pencil. Then trace over each word 3 times. Each time you trace you must use a different colour.
Alphabetical order
Write your spelling words in alphabetical order. Then try to write them in backwards ABC order!
Connect the dots
Write your spelling words in dots. Then connect the dots by tracing over them with a coloured pencil.
Blue vowels
Write each of your spelling words. Trace over the vowels in each word with a blue coloured pencil. Vowels = a e I o u
Pyramid power
Sort your words into a list from easiest to hardest. Write the easiest word at the top of the page near the middle. Write the next easiest word twice underneath. Write the third easiest word three times underneath and so on.
Example:
                              Cat
                       Said   said
                   Little little little
Upper and lower
First write your spelling words as normal. Then rewrite the word but this time write the vowels in lowercase and consonants in uppercase. Example: lower = LoWeR
Backwards words
Write your spelling words forwards and then backwards. Remember to write neatly.
Squiggly spelling
Write your words in  squiggly letters. Then write them in regular neat writing.
Ambidextrous
Swap your pen into the hand you don’t normally write with. Now try writing your spelling words with that hand. Next swap back to write them neatly with your normal writing hand.
 Spelling scrabble
Write your spelling words neatly then write your words scrambled up. These are called anagrams.  Example: seaside   aisdees
Consonant circle
Write each of your spelling words. Then go back and circle all of the consonants in your spelling words.
Three times
Write each word 3 times. First write each word in pencil. Second write in a coloured pencil then third write each word neatly in pen.

Here are some other ideas for pupils to try out at home:
Silly sentences
Write ten silly sentences using a spelling word in each sentence. Please underline your spelling words! Write neatly!

Acrostic poem
Choose one of your words and write an acrostic poem for that word. Example for word “fly”:
Fun in the sky
Laps around clouds
Yes! I’m free!

Bubble letters
Write your spelling words in bubble letters. Colour in the letters but think of interesting ways to colour them. Perhaps you could colour vowels one colour and consonants another, or letters that are the same the same colour. Try to be creative!

Wordsearch
Create your own word search using your spelling words.

Word finder
You can only complete this task if you have previously made a word search. Look back at previous homework and complete the word search you made.

Ransom Note
Using old newspapers or magazines find the letters to make up your spelling words. Cut them out and glue them in your jotter or on paper. Make sure you spell them correctly!

Extra
There are so many creative ways of learning spelling patterns. Pupils could try to come up with their own activities? Other popular games/activities include:
Hangman
Scrabble
Using magnetic letters or scrabble tiles to create words
Shaving foam writing
Sand writing
Painting words
Outdoor chalk writing
