It was our last outdoor learning day today with Anna. She will be coming back to show us how to make bird boxes and we are going to present what we have learnt and will be getting our John Muir certificates.
Our first activity of the day was mapping. We put our token and created a map to help other groups find it. Some groups made the maps confusing or hard and others were easy to find. We also got a short time trying to make fire with the fire makers.
Two groups completed a challenge called Toxic Frogs, we had two ropes and we had to find two trees and tie the ropes around so the group of 3 or 4 people had to get their feet off the ground. Some people sat on the rope and some managed to stand on the ropes. Anna said we had two excellent groups and the boys who tied up the ropes did some great knots!
The other groups had some carpet which they had to flip over from black to white without standing off it. It was tricky but some of us managed to do it.
We came back in doors and we discussed our presentation day and we ate marshmallows and sausages.
Today we went in to the woods with Anna. When we got to the woods we played trust fall games again and a few people got scared to fall. We did this game in partners but also in groups.
Then we played a game called Shrek's Swamp where we had 100 points and if you touched the ground with a single body part you lost 5 points, if it was with your whole body you lost 10 points. We worked really really well as teams and got great results and times for travelling across the swamp.
We had sausages and marshmallows. Some of us were brave and had both of them at the same time!! Most of us thought they were great!
As this is the last outdoor learning before the New Year we have discussed what we have all enjoyed......
"Best part of outdoor learning is having marshmallows and sausages. I enjoyed putting the fire out. I enjoyed den making, game making, trust fall and cocktail making. I enjoyed everything, no bad parts!" LB
"My favourite part was at the end when we had sausages and marshmallows because I got two of each!! They were soooo good. One of my marshmallows went on fire. I loved it a lot, it was awesome." AM
"I recommend marshmallows and sausages." SR
"My favourite part was the swamp game, it should be called Shrek vs PLAYERS. My other part was with marshmallows and sausages, together they are sooooooo good!!" KS
Today we were learning inside because it was a yellow weather warning. The warning was for very bad rain and wind so it would have been very muddy for us.
We done our topic wall for the display, some people were making pictures of John Muir and others posters. Then we designed a bird house on a sheet of paper. We will be hopefully making real bird houses after the Christmas holidays. We finished our paintings and in the afternoon we created our own display board.
We have been learning about John Muir and his life today.
Our second last week of outdoor learning with Anna. :( We build dens as a team and we made them out of string and tarp.
We made clay models and some of us made snowmen in hats and faces on trees. The clay was difficult to work with at first but as soon as we started pulling it apart we found it easier. When the clay got wet it became really slimey.
We pretended we were on an island and we had a list of items that we could have on the stranded island with us. JB built a pretend campfire to help us keep warm.
We also used fire starters to try and start our own fires using cotton wool buds. Some people lit them on fire whilst others struggled as the cotton wool got a bit wet! IK gave some hints to rip the wet parts out and it helped some other groups. We found this quite difficult but enjoyed seeing the sparks when we got it to work.
We again had marshmallows because we built some excellent dens and worked great as a team.
This week we were out making games and taking part in a trust fall game.
In the trust fall game we had to get in to partners and stand behind them. We had to say go and they fell backwards and the other partner had to catch them and then push them back. We enjoyed it a lot but some people didn't trust their partners. Overall we did it really well.
In the game maker we made lots of games for example throwing sticks, bowling, Operation SS and others. We were in a group of 4-5 people and we had to collect sticks, stones and other natural objects to make a game. We had to use the natural materials around us. It was great to see that every group managed to create a completely different game from each other. The reviews of the games were mostly 10/10.
Some of us wanted to make smelly cocktails but had to use stuff found around us (but no poo)... They were really smelly and I don't think anyone of us would like to drink them!
Some people's marshmallows got completely burnt and some didn't like them! Most of us think roasted marshmallows are yummy!!
Today we went in to the woodland and we went in small groups and collected stones, twigs and other bits and pieces and we had to create an imaginary story. Some of our stories included The Alien and the Poo, Titanic, Woodlice Waterpark, The Mudman, Snowman, The Fungus and The Fox. We wrote these stories in class in the afternoon, some of our stories are shown below.
One of the groups made a den on top of the slope and it was in-between two trees. It was hard to get the sticks in to the ground and also when we were playing we found a pretty rare fungus and it was called Jelly Fungus. We took photos of the den and a lot of other people made dens that were epic fails and some where completed and amazing! We certainly needed the dens to keep us sheltered. We were happy to be inside to get dry and warm today!!
"There was an alien called Jimbob. And he set off in his boat and went to a deserted island. It was 700 miles away in a boat. He was 350 miles away from the island. But just 1 mile away from the island it got eaten by a kraken." JB
"Wally was a little woodlice and he wanted somewhere to sleep. First he tried a log, "That is too big," said Wally. Second he tried a tree, "That's too tall," said Wally. After a while Wally gave up but out of nowhere lots of big people appeared and Wally decided to hide. After they left Wally saw a lot of bug hotels. He went to a wood lice hotel and he loved it. Then he had a drink. Finally he found somewhere to sleep. The End." LN-MacP
"One day a woodlice named Jimmy was crawling around and saw a water park, he went and it was empty. So he got changed into his orange suit, climbed up the 52 foot tornado water slide. When he got to the top he slid down, then when he got to the bottom he started drowning! Then he fell down a huge drain (in his point of view) and ended up in the sewers! Then he saw a dark shadow, it turned around. It was a beautiful wood lice named Patrisha. They made a family then slowly died. Their two sons Billy and Max found a ladder climbed up the ladder and ended up at the same water park. And the story repeated for centuries." AM
We will be talking about somethings we done this week in the woods with a lady called Anna.
We were playing this trust game called "Meet a Tree". Its a game where you need to close your eyes and a person in your team needs to take you to a tree and take you back to the same spot you closed your eyes. Then you open your eyes and see if you can find the same tree you touched.
Then we went on a bug hunt, we all found spiders, beetles, woodlice and centipedes. Then we made bug hotels for the bugs. And we went on a tour of them.
We found a lot of different fungus. One of them is called Dead Man's Fingers...
When we finished the tour me roasted marshmallows and they were delicious!!! Some of them were burnt but it was ok as it added to the flavour!
Anna came in to our school and she was telling us that she comes to schools and tells us about woodlands and the things we can find in them.
We then went outside. We first looked around the woodland beside the school looking for dangers and risks. During that time we saw an amazing view! We called this the P6 castle. Then we found our base and went on a treasure hunt.
In the afternoon we used leaves that we had collected earlier to create Rangolis because it was the celebration of Diwali. It happened on Sunday and it is the festival of light. We had fun working in groups to create our circular designs.
