We've  had a lovely start to our year in P5 and would like to share with you our newly created Class Charter.  This has been the product of lots of discussions  about both our Rights and why they're important and about Emotion Works which is helping us to  understand, talk about and manage how we are feeling.  Mrs Reid and Mrs Williams are really looking forward to working with the P5s over the coming year and achieving great things.

Happy Holidays P5!

Well, this is it P5 - our last post and your last day as P5s.
It's hard to believe this is the end of the year - I know it's been an odd one.  In my house today my children wanted to do what they would do on the last day of school if they were there, so they've already got their end of term film picked out to watch and both are going to choose a favourite board game to play.  Why don't you do the same?

Also, here is a summer homework grid - this has a few suggestions of things to try either today or over the summer.  They're all quite fun and might help you to make your days a bit different.  You could even try and create your own summer grid by thinking of something different or trying something new each day.  It doesn't have to be big- however small still counts.

So P5s - I wish you all a wonderful summer and the very best of luck for your P6 year.  It has been a pleasure getting to know you all this year for the time that we were together.

Happy Holidays!

Activities for 15 - 26 June

15/6/2020

Good morning P5
I hope you all had a lovely weekend.  As the summer holidays are fast approaching (just over two weeks away) we decided not to give you another learning grid, but instead to give you a selection of fun activities to do for the last two weeks.  Mrs Reid or I shall suggest one of these per day on Teams.  If you don't access Teams, then just take your pick of one each day.
If you're finding it's not enough for you, then you could always refer back to the learning packs and do anything you haven't completed, or practise hand writing, Sumdog,  reading, times tables etc.
Today - why not try designing your own treasure map!
Have fun!
Mrs Williams

Hi P5!
I hope you are all keeping well – I miss you all!  Everyone should have received a home learning pack before school closed and I have added some ideas for additional learning activities below. Please do not feel you have to complete everything mentioned, these are just suggestions. You will be learning in lots of different ways at home – through playing, helping out, going outdoors etc.
If you have pictures of any of your learning at home we would love to see them – you can share these in the comments box or on the school Facebook page. You can also get in touch with me directly at gw16aitkenamanda@glow.sch.uk if you have any other questions.
Take care,
 Mrs Reid

 Reading
From the home learning pack: finish current reading book and task sheets.
Read for enjoyment at home – this could be novels, picture books, newspapers, magazines, comics, recipe books!
Daily 5 Challenge – We have been perfecting the ‘Read to Self’ skill and trying to build our stamina to keep focused on reading. As a class we managed to achieve 10 minutes on our chart – can you beat it?
Remember the criteria:
1. Choose an appropriate book (interesting, not too easy or hard)
2. Choose a suitable reading spot and stay there.
3.  Stay silent for the whole time (no chatting!)
4. Stay focused on reading (no daydreaming!)
5. Check for comprehension (make sure you understand what have you read at the end of each page)
Set yourself a timer or challenge a member of your family! Remember to restart the timer if anyone breaks the rules!
 Spelling
From the home learning pack: Use the spelling task grid to practise Platinum and Diamond High Frequency words.
Challenge – Can you think of a different way to practise your words that is not on the chart? Be as creative as you can!
Ask someone at home to quiz you on some of the words, perhaps 10 words each time.  Highlight the words you spelt incorrectly and focus on practising these with your grid. Then ask for these words as well as some new ones in your next quiz.
 Numeracy
From the home learning pack: Easter mosaics worksheet. Use Sumdog with personal login to practise individualised questions.
In class last term we were focusing on addition and subtraction and in particular using mental strategies to solve problems. Some of these strategies we found useful were: Partitioning (adding Hundreds, Tens, Ones separately then all together), doubles and near doubles, making 10/100, linking to know facts.
Challenge -  Practise some addition and subtraction games online (links in home learning pack) or create your own questions on a piece of paper. Can you tell someone at home which strategy you used to get the answer?
Basic Maths Facts
Keep practising quick mental recall of your basic maths facts. I have attached pictures of the posters below with examples of facts for each level. You can find lots of games online (links in the home learning pack) or ask someone at home to quiz you. How many questions can you answer in 1 minute?
 Health and Well-being
From the home learning pack: complete SHANARRI diary, Growth v Fixed Mindset sheet
Life is very different for us at the moment and strange not having our usual routines. You might be feeling anxious or sad at times so try to use Emotion Works and have a think of Blue Cog Strategies to help you if you e.g. talking to someone at home, mindful colouring, breathing exercises.

Take time to do fun activities and  keep active!

 Hello P5s
I hope you’ve enjoying your time at home and have still been managing to do some learning.  Please remember – this can take any form – it doesn’t have to mean sitting at desk with a pencil. Even helping around the house, and doing fun things with your family will be helping your learning too. However, here are a few more ideas to keep you going:
It would be great to hear from any of you or if you need to ask me any thing at all - so please either post here or send me an email - gw17williamsfiona@glow.sch.uk.  I'll be checking these every day so will respond as quickly as I can.
Thinking of you all and hope to see you soon.
Best wishes
Mrs Williams

Writing
Newspaper Article
In our last week of school we had started to revisit our learning on writing a newspaper article.   Try writing one at home – here are some ideas you could use for your article:
  • Monster or mythical creature spotted in your home town
  • Burglary at the local bakers shop . supermarket
  • Langlee Primary School disappears during the night
  • Or make up your own gripping article

Things to remember:
  • Think of a name for your newspaper and a catchy headline
  • Remember the first paragraph should tell you what, when, where and who.
  • Next paragraphs go into more detail
  • Write in third person and past tense
  • Good punctuation – capital letters and full stops.
  • Try and make it look like a newspaper – write in columns, include a picture.

Diary
We are living through an exceptional time in history right now.  In the last learning pack I asked you to keep a diary – have you done this?  If not,  why not start keeping one – even every few days – explain what is happening and why (e.g. we’re not allowed to go out because…) – this is something you may look back on in years to come.

Diary things to remember:
  • Write it in the first person (I, me, we)
  • Remember to include your thoughts and feelings.

Maths
Times tables
Keep practising those times tables – 2,3,5 and 10.  If you think you can answer any question out of order on these quickly (e.g. 6x 3 = )  , then move on to your other tables.  If not, keep practising. There are lots of websites to help you with times tables.   Try Top Marks,  Sum Dog or another fun site is BBC – Guardians: Defenders of Mathematica
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zd2f7nb/articles/zn2y7nb

Information Handling
At school we were doing well collecting data and drawing graphs or pictorgrams.
Here are a few things that you could try at home.

1. Dice rolling data
For this you need a dice and a piece of paper and a pencil.
Roll a dice 50 times.  Make a tally chart of how many times you roll a 1,2,3,4,5 or 6
Is there any one number you roll more than another?  Present your data as a graph at the end to see which number you rolled the most/the least.

2. Try these other information handling sheets attached as pdfs at the bottom of this post.

3. Can you think of any other information you could gather while you’re at home?  See if you could ask family (in your household or phone others) to gather some research on a question of your choice.

Topic
Things I asked you to do last time:
  • Create a fact file about farming in the UK.  Find out as much as you can about different types of farms.
  • Try and find out about food’s journey.  Choose some foods and research how they get from the farm to our plate.  Some ideas—cheese, milk or bread.
  • Write either a report or create a powerpoint or a poster on the food’s journey that you’ve chosen.
  • Find out where different foods in your home come from—plot them on a map of the world/UK.

Keep going with these activities.  If you have finished them all then next you can try this:
  • Choose a product which is farmed in another country  - this could be rice, tea, coffee, bananas etc.  Make a fact file finding as much as you can about how it’s produced.
  • Compare farming in the UK and farming in the country you’ve chosen.  What are the differences ?  What are the similarities.
  • A useful website: https://www.farmafrica.org/what-we-do-1/stories-from-our-work-2
  • Draw a poster/write a report/create a powerpoint to display what you have learnt

Here are some fun Easter activities you could try too attached as a pdf at the bottom of the post.

Good luck and enjoy!
