Children's Mental Health Week

1/2/2021

This year there is a focus on children and adults expressing themselves.

What is self-expression and why is it important?
Self-expression is about communicating your individuality. This can be through words, clothing and hairstyle, or through art forms such as writing, drawing, music and dance.

Self-expression can help you to showcase your true self – your story, your thoughts, feelings and emotions. But this can also make us feel vulnerable, so you might want to take things one step at a time.

We often get told by our family, friends, school, communities and through social media how we ‘should’ look, think, speak, and act. These constant messages about what we ought to do, and who we ought to be, can make it difficult to let go of expectations and express our true selves.

I will pop up podcasts for you to listen to throughout the week on Teams. Some activities that you might want to try at home are below too.

Monday - Developing a growth mindset
Tuesday - Mindfulness Breathing
Wednesday - I am determined
Thursday - Guided meditation
Friday - I am amazing

Activities:
  • Things to look forward jar (Friday on Teams)
  • Dancing, baking, singing, drawing, painting, crafts, sports or exercise, going to the park, gymnastics, playing with pets, gaming, watching TV… anything to express yourself!
  • Mr Guthrie shared a video of him reading the story Ruby's Worry. We have read this in class already but why not watch his video again on the school Facebook page.
  • Watch some of the BAFTA Kids videos on their playlist. I've shared the I Express Myself Through Art below as art and design is something that I like to focus on when I am not teaching.
